What is Edmonton Platelet Rich Plasms (PRP) Therapy?

One of the advances in facial and body rejuvenation is here. Edmonton’s Advanced Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) harnesses the regenerative and restorative powers of our own bodies to re-grow and regenerate skin cells and tissues while nurturing new supportive skin structures. It is a rejuvenating product that uses the components of our own blood. It is extremely well tolerated with virtually no possibilities of allergic reactions while providing predictable and long-lasting results. It can be used to correct many problems including stubborn facial lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.

Edmonton’s Youthful Image Clinic has been performing PRP for over 15 years to treat a variety of medical and cosmetic concerns. We use proprietary technology that harvests at least 40cc of whole blood. The prepared RP is then injected or applied to the treated zones with needles, cannular or topically.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why and how does Edmonton PRP work?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is natural as it uses our own body’s safe and proven restorative and regenerative machinery. When the blood is drawn from the client (at least 40cc of whole blood), it is separated into PRP and concentrated red blood cells fractions. We then use the PRP to treat clients. That PRP fraction contains healing compounds within platelets and within the surrounding fluid.

PRP is readily accepted by our bodies enhancing natural tissue building elements. When injected into the skin, PRP activates and promotes new cell growth and collagen formation through the release of various growth factors and other agents related to tissue healing and regeneration. As such, it takes several weeks for the full effect to show.

It is not like any other injectable rejuvenating product as only collagen stimulators and cell growth promoters are used rather than filler itself. Furthermore, PRP gently blends with surrounding tissues making its effects very natural. You have choices in addressing your skin concerns!

What areas of the body can be successfully treated with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Since Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural product and its regenerative and healing properties are well known, we can treat most body areas to achieve more youthful and regenerative results.
FACE: All skin regions on the face can be treated to improve firmness, texture, glow, radiance, elasticity, dyspigmentation, scarring, wrinkles, and dark under-eye regions.
SCALP: When properly prepared and applied, PRP can be successfully deployed to treat multiple causes of hair loss. The results do vary but, generally speaking, the hair loss can be stabilized or result in hair re-growth.
HANDS and FEET: PRP can be applied to hands and feet to improve firmness, texture, glow, radiance, elasticity, dyspigmentation. The appearance of the hand veins can be improved with the generation on new collagen and elastin.
BODY: Stretch marks can be successfully treated with PRP. The best time is to treatment them early (when they are still red or pink) but even later treatments can be successful. Stretch marks on the breasts, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, knees, hips and back (among others) can be successfully treated with PRP. As with any other treatments, combination approaches are more successful in improvement of the appearance of stretch marks.

GENITAL REGIONS: PRP can be used successfully in the female genital regions. Its rejuvenating, invigorating, regenerating, and restorative properties have been documented in the treatments of the labia, clitoris, and vagina. The specific reason for the treatment and potential side effects needs to be fully reviewed prior to any therapy. Edmonton’s Youthful Image staff is fully trained in the application of PRP in these areas.

Can Edmonton PRP be combined with other products and procedures?

Successful rejuvenation strategies need to address different patient concerns. As such, it is very common to use different technologies and treatments to address the unique requirements and needs of each patient. Platelet Rich Plasma can be used alone or in combination with other treatments including Skin Boosters, Laser Treatments, neuromodulators (e.g. Dysport®, Xeomin®, Botox®, and others), home treatments as well as cosmetic fillers (e.g. Restylane®, Juvederm®, Radiesse®, and others), fat grafting and soft tissue volumizers such as Sculptra®.

In many cases, a synergistic approach is needed to produce the Edmonton Youthful Image optimal results. We strive to achieve desired results and not just treat clients with A or B. It is all about what we want to achieve and the approach to have it accomplished.

What are the benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) over other treatments?

Clearly, the biggest benefit of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is that it is created from the patient’s own body – specifically, the patient’s own blood. The body readily accepts this self-derived product with allergic reactions being extremely rare. It is very abundant, readily available, renewable, and sustainable!
PRP is a collagen and cell growth stimulator and does not cause clumping, knots, or granulomas. Our own bodies have a tremendous capacity to rejuvenate and regenerate and PRP harnesses that power to our unique needs.

Another major advantage of PRP is the readily accessible and plentiful source. Although only a small amount of blood (at least 40cc of whole blood) is needed for each treatment. Larger treatments and multiple treatments are possible. Our body constantly produces blood and regulates its contents making PRP treatments very safe.

Who is a candidate for Edmonton Platelet Rich Plasms (PRP) Therapy?

With its proven safety, properly harvested and applied Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) can be used by almost all people. In particular, patients with all skin types regardless of ethnicity can use PRP successfully. However, patients with blood infections or clotting problems, or those on blood thinners may need to exercise more caution. This is where the experience and expertise of the doctor come in. It is easy to suggest PRP for everything but is this the right solution for a given client?
Appropriate selection of treatment is important so that nobody is disappointed with the resulting outcome. We have seen too often when a good treatment was poorly applied, for the wrong reason and for the wrong person. This can lead to less-than-ideal results, sour the faith of the client in the PRP technology, decrease the perception of cosmetic industry and prevent the client from receiving PRP for the correct reason in the future.

After more than 25 years in the industry, Edmonton’s Youthful Image can successfully assess the concerns and recommend appropriate treatment(s). We are truthful about the expectations and want to make sure that all questions and concerns are fully answered before proceeding with treatments.

What is the recovery and what are the side effects after Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment?

Edmonton Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is very well tolerated and the recovery is relatively easy. It does not contain any animal or synthetic products. The side effects are generally mild and short lasting.
It is an injection or topical application and some swelling and bruising for a few days is possible. Infections are very rare as the PRP preparation process is very well controlled. Some patients can experience some redness or itchiness but that is usually mild and generally resolves itself in a few days.

PRP, being a collagen and cell growth stimulator and enhancer, takes time to work. Once the initial swelling diminishes, the production of new cells, collagen, and support structures starts. In the next 6–8 weeks, the effects of PRP treatment become gradually evident with smoother lines and younger-looking skin. Its effects are long-lasting and satisfactory results can be achieved with one treatment, however, repeat treatments may be needed to maintain or enhance results.
