What is Edmonton Labiaplasty?

Edmonton Labiaplasty clinic, Youthful Image Clinic, offers multiple feminine health and genital rejuvenation therapies. One of them is Labiaplasty using laser [laser labiaplasty], scalpel [surgical labiaplasty] or other methods.

Labiaplasty is an in-demand procedure that reshapes and recontours labia minora [smaller inner lips] and/or labia majora [larger, outer, hair bearing lips]. This procedure can be used to improve appearance or discomfort that can occur when the size or bulkiness of the labia result in chafing or discomfort. Some women are born with enlarged or asymmetrical labia while other women develop these changes over time during puberty or after childbirths. Although, the majority of these variations are within the normal limits, these changes can make women feel self-conscious about their labia appearance.

Labiaplasty is performed using topical and local anaesthesia in our Accredited Non-Hospital Surgical Facility in downtown Edmonton. The focus of the procedure is to produce optimal results in a safe, respectful and professional atmosphere. We have been performing surgical procedures for almost 25 years! Experience is important and we are proud of our accomplishments in patient care over the decades!

Although there are many ways that labiaplasty can be performed, we focus on two most common and successful techniques: “Trim the Edges” method and “Wedge, Edge Preserving” method. More about these methods later!

Labia, just like people, come in different shapes and sizes. They vary in size, shape, texture, thickness, colour and many other characteristics. Some women are concerned that one labium is bigger than the other (asymmetry) or when both labia are too large for their comfort or preference.

Who is the candidate for Edmonton Labiaplasty?

Edmonton Labiaplasty clinic, Youthful Image Clinic, is proud to be an Accredited Non-Hospital Surgical Facility by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta focusing on safety, comfort and results for our patients. Any procedure involving removal or modification of body tissues requires thorough assessment, review of benefits, treatment options and potential risks. This is best accomplished via in-person visit although, in some circumstances, remote (tele-health) visit may be needed when in-person visits are impractical.

Each person’s self-assessment and concern regarding their personal features is unique and deserves recognition. Individual variations in anatomy, even when completely normal and natural, may be of concern to some patients. We need to accept these feelings and try to address them as best as we can.

When something is on your mind over and over, it is reasonable to ask about what are the options of dealing with it. Many concerns can be addressed just by reviewing the facts and answering questions and, in some situations, interventions may be needed to address the issues at hand.

This also applies to undergoing labiaplasty procedure. So, the question remains: Who is the candidate for Labiaplasty?

Generally speaking, candidates for labiaplasty are patients who:

  • Are over 18 years of age (younger, if parent(s) / guardian(s) agree),
  • Are generally healthy,
  • Understand the risks and benefits of labiaplasty,
  • Have concerns regarding the appearance of the labia minora or labia majora,
  • Have discomfort during sexual activity,
  • Have concerns regarding the functions of the labia tissue (pinching, tugging or chafing in clothing)

As always, detailed consultation with review of options, benefits and risks are the best way to proceed in the process of discovering what is the best course of action for you!

What are the benefits of Edmonton Labiaplasty?

Any procedure can not be undertaken lightly! At the same time, most of the time the benefits of Labiaplasty greatly outweigh the possible risks!

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Reduction in size of the labia – this can include reduction in one labium (to make them more symmetrical and equal to the opposite side). This can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty,
  • Reduction in thickness of one or both labia – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty,
  • Reduction of the length of one or both labia – – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty,
  • Reduction in colour of the edge of one or both labia – – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty,

What are the functions of Labia?

Labia, frequently overlooked and underappreciated, are the fleshy skin folds outside of the vagina and include both Labia majora (outer lips/labia, generally larger hear bearing labia) and Labia minora (inner lips/labia, devoid of hair).

Generally speaking, the functions of the labia include:

  • Protection of the vagina, clitoris and the urethra (opening where we pee from)
  • Provision of cushion from the external forces
  • Lubrication when easy movement and sliding is needed.
  • External genital region of each person is unique resulting in various sizes, shapes and colours! When it comes to any questions and possible modifications, it is fundamentally up to the owner of the parts. As such, we take great care to emphasize that the variation in anatomy is very much normal in the vast majority of persons.

What are the different types of Edmonton Labiaplasty procedures?

There are several ways that labiaplasty can be performed. These include Laser Labiaplasty (procedure where laser is used to perform all or part of the procedure), Surgical Labiaplasty (procedure where scalpel blade and scissors are used to perform all or part of the procedure), combination Laser and Surgical Labiaplasty (procedure where combination of laser and surgical instruments are used as part of the procedure).

In addition, there are two main techniques for performing successful Edmonton Labiaplasty: “Trim the Edges” method and “Wedge, Edge Preserving” method. Let’s review them separately!

Trim the Edges method involves removing part of the free edges of the labia minora. This is the procedure where there is the most reduction in the colour of the labia edges as they are mostly removed during the procedure. The amounts and the contours of the tissue removal need to be precise as to produce improvement and, at the same time, maintain the appropriate function of remaining tissue. This is where the training of the doctor performing the procedure comes in! Look below for details of Dr. Sapijaszko’s training!

Wedge, Edge Preserving technique involves the “wedge” [in the shape of pizza slice] resection. This technique has the most success in shortening the labia and preserving as much of the outer edge of the labial tissue as possible. Because of the reduction in labia length that can be accomplished with this technique, it is desirable for those who feel that their labia are too long. This is where the training of the doctor performing the procedure comes in! Look below for details of Dr. Sapijaszko’s training!

Each treatment method has advantages and disadvantages. The choice of the therapy needs to be agreed on between the patient and the doctor. It is also important that the doctor is familiar and trained in both techniques and be able to offer these choices to prospective candidates. Edmonton Labiaplasty Recovery

One of the most common questions that clients ask is regarding post-procedure recovery.

In many ways, post-procedure care is as important as the procedure itself!

It is critical to follow care instructions as well as sexual activity, exercise and movement instructions. Each person heals differently and, even though, genital areas heal well, care must be taken that we give the body all the help we can to heal itself!

Regular post-procedures office or tele-health follow up visits are important to make sure that all questions and concerns are always answered. Recovery is new to the patients but we are familiar with the healing and help guide the healing to successful conclusion.

Discomfort following the procedure generally lasts a few days and can easily be managed with over-the-counter medications, cool compresses and rest. Depending on the procedure performed, “Trim the Edges” vs “Wedge, Edge Preserving” method, rest (few days), reduction in exercises (such as bike rides, squatting or horse back riding) and anything putting pressure or stretch on the area need to be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks. The duration of sexual activity that needs to be avoided is based on the surgical technique used. Generally speaking, sexual activity involving treatment area and the vicinity regions needs to be avoided for at least four weeks.

Surgical scars heal very well in the genital mucosal regions and look like fine lines. To enhance healing, we will provide recommendations on daily care.

Is there anything specific when it comes to recovery following Labiaplasty in Edmonton or Alberta in general? The answer is yes! In winter, there is tendency to wear tight undergarments and, when it comes to the labiaplasty post-procedure care, these need to be avoided to decrease the rubbing effect. Furthermore, skin tends to be dryer in Alberta winters and, as such, appropriate moisturization of the regional skin is advised!
