What is the Labia?
The labia, frequently overlooked and underappreciated, are the fleshy skin folds outside the vagina. They include the labia majora (outer lips/labia, generally larger hair-bearing labia) and labia minora (inner lips/labia, devoid of hair).
Generally speaking, the functions of the labia include:
- Protection of the vagina, clitoris, and the urethra (opening where we pee from)
- Provision of cushion from the external forces
- Lubrication when easy movement and sliding is needed.

What Is Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is an in-demand feminine rejuvenation procedure that reshapes and recontours labia minora (smaller inner lips) and/or labia majora (larger, outer, hair-bearing lips). This procedure can improve the appearance or discomfort that can occur when the size or bulkiness of the labia results in chafing or discomfort.
Women seek labiaplasty in Edmonton for various reasons, including congenital differences, changes after puberty or childbirth, or discomfort such as chafing, pinching, or tugging when wearing certain clothing or during physical activity. While variations in labial anatomy are normal, these changes can make women feel self-conscious.
The procedure is performed using laser (laser labiaplasty), electrocautery (advanced labiaplasty), scalpel (surgical labiaplasty), or a combination of methods and takes about 1-2 hours. It is performed in our accredited non-hospital surgical facility in downtown Edmonton, focusing on optimal results in a safe, respectful, and professional atmosphere.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
Generally speaking, candidates for labiaplasty are patients who:
- Are over 18 years of age (younger, if parent(s) / guardian(s) agree)
- Are generally healthy
- Understand the risks and benefits of labiaplasty
- Have concerns regarding the appearance of the labia minora or labia majora
- Have discomfort during sexual activity
- Have concerns regarding the functions of the labia tissue (pinching, tugging or chafing in clothing)
As always, the best way to proceed is to have a detailed consultation and review your options, benefits, and risks.

Types of Labiaplasty Procedures
There are several ways to perform labiaplasty. These include:
- Laser Labiaplasty: A laser is used to perform all or part of the procedure
- Surgical Labiaplasty: A scalpel blade and scissors are used to perform all or part of the procedure
- Combination Laser and Surgical Labiaplasty: A combination of laser and surgical instruments is used as part of the procedure
Additionally, there are two main techniques for performing successful Edmonton Labiaplasty: the “Trim the Edges” method and the “Wedge, Edge Preserving” method.
“Trim the Edges”
The “Trim the Edges” method involves removing part of the free edges of the labia minora. This is the procedure where the colour of the labia edges is the most reduced, as they are mostly removed during the procedure. The amounts and the contours of the tissue removal need to be precise to produce improvement and, at the same time, maintain the appropriate function of the remaining tissue. This is where the doctor’s training for performing the procedure comes in! Look below for details of Dr. Sapijaszko’s training!
“Wedge, Edge Preserving”
The “Wedge, Edge Preserving” technique involves the “wedge” (in the shape of a pizza slice) resection. This technique has the most success in shortening the labia and preserving as much of the outer edge of the labial tissue as possible. Because of the reduction in labia length that can be accomplished with this technique, it is desirable for those who feel their labia are too long.

Each treatment method has advantages and disadvantages. The choice of technique must be agreed on between the patient and the doctor. It is also crucial that the doctor is familiar and trained in both techniques and can offer these choices to prospective candidates.

What to Expect During Your Labiaplasty Recovery
One of the most common questions that clients ask is regarding post-procedure recovery.
In many ways, post-procedure care is as important as the procedure itself!
It is critical to follow care instructions, including sexual activity, exercise, and movement instructions. Each person heals differently, and even though genital areas heal well, care must be taken to give the body all the help we can to heal itself!
Regular post-procedure office or telehealth follow-up visits are important to ensure all questions and concerns are answered. Recovery is new to the patients, but we are familiar with the healing process and help guide it to a successful conclusion.
Discomfort following the procedure generally lasts a few days and can easily be managed with over-the-counter medications, cold compresses, and rest. Depending on the procedure performed, avoid cycling, squatting, or horseback riding, and anything that puts pressure or stretch on the area for at least 3-4 weeks.
Generally speaking, sexual activity involving the treatment area and the vicinity regions needs to be avoided for at least four weeks.
Surgical scars heal well in the genital mucosal regions and look like fine lines. To enhance healing, we will provide recommendations on daily care.

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?
Some of the key benefits include:
- Reduction in size of the labia – this can include reduction in one labium (to make them more symmetrical and equal to the opposite side). This can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty.
- Reduction in thickness of one or both labia – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty.
- Reduction of the length of one or both labia – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty.
- Reduction in colour of the edge of one or both labia – this can be accomplished with laser labiaplasty or scalpel labiaplasty.

What are the costs of Labiaplasty?
At the Edmonton Youthful Image Clinic, the procedure costs encompass all pre-procedure visits, surgeon and surgical room fees, and all post-procedure visits. This is unique as there is only one easily understood fee.
Depending on the type of procedure, extent of the needed surgery, and equipment used, the cost varies between $750 and up. Please note that these costs may change without notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is labiaplasty a painful procedure?
During the labiaplasty surgery, discomfort is minimized with local anesthesia and sedation. Post-procedure, pain is typically manageable with prescribed medication, and most clients report mild discomfort rather than severe pain, which usually subsides within a few days.
Can labiaplasty improve sexual sensation?
While labiaplasty is not primarily designed to enhance sexual sensation, some people report improved comfort and confidence during intimacy, which can indirectly lead to a more satisfying sexual experience.
Are there any alternatives to labiaplasty surgery?
Labiaplasty surgery remains the most effective solution for significant size reduction or reshaping. However, for some concerns, non-surgical options like feminine rejuvenation treatments, such as the O-Shot for enhanced feminine wellness or specific laser therapies, might be considered. We encourage a labiaplasty consultation to discuss all available options.
How noticeable will the scars be after labiaplasty?
Scarring is minimal; genital mucosal tissue heals exceptionally well, with scars typically appearing as fine lines that fade over time.
Is there anything specific about recovery following Labiaplasty in Edmonton or Alberta in general?
Yes. In winter, people tend to wear tight undergarments, which need to be avoided in labiaplasty post-procedure care to decrease the rubbing effect. Furthermore, skin tends to be drier in Alberta winters, so appropriate moisturization of the regional skin is advised!
