LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is a proven and effective method of body fat removal. It is aimed to contour the body, not to treat obesity. Tumescent liposuction is designed to remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells that are unresponsive to exercise or a good diet. It is an outpatient dermatologic procedure with a rapid recovery, performed under local anaesthesia here in Edmonton at Youthful Image Clinic. WHAT IS THE TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUE?
The word “tumescent” means swollen and firm. The tumescent liposuction technique is designed to deliver maximum results while minimizing the risks. Completed while the patient is conscious, this technique ensures no pain during the procedure, limits bleeding, and avoids the risks of general anesthesia. The treatment area is numbed with a low concentration anesthetic solution. Subsequently, the fat is removed through small incisions in the skin. The amount of fat removed is determined by constantly evaluating the area. Following the procedure, an absorbent pad is placed over the small skin incisions and a pressure garment is worn for several days after.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?
Suitable candidates include individuals in good health with firm elastic skin and distinct areas of localized fat causing the area to appear disproportionate to the rest of the body. Each patient is personally assessed by Dr. Sapijaszko to determine if she or he is a suitable candidate for the procedure. For optimal success, it is important for patients to maintain good exercise and nutritional habits before and after the procedure.

Dr. Mariusz Sapijaszko received training in tumescent liposuction surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and more recently at the University of California in San Francisco. He was extensively trained by world-renowned cosmetic surgeons and the creator of tumescent liposuction surgery himself, Dr. Jeffery Klein. WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED AFTER THE PROCEDURE?
Post-surgery, patients are provided with detailed care instructions. They are able to walk immediately following the surgery. The drainage of the anesthetic solution from the incision sites takes approximately 18 to 36 hours to stop. During that time, it is important to wear compression garments and absorbent pads. Patients usually return to normal activity within three to five days and full physical activity within a week.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED BY TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION?
Most areas with excess fat can be treated, including chin, neck, jowls, arms, chest (men), inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees, hips, back and abdomen.
