OK – How many of us need some fat removed and a little skin tightening here and there? I am not asking those in their 20s or early 30s, but we know that as we get a little older the pesky fat tends to accumulate in not-so-good areas and we seem to grow more skin than we really need. We lose fat where we need fat and we gain fat where we don’t need it at all. The situation with our skin is different – we just gain skin all over our bodies. That tight form-fitting skin we once had becomes, over time, one or two sizes bigger than what is needed for our frame. It is for these reasons that fat reducing and skin tightening technologies are gaining popularity. Several non-surgical techniques exist that can reduce fat and others are there to tighten the skin. What is new is Fractora Firm® – a new device that can do both.
WHAT AREAS CAN FRACTORA FIRM® TREAT?
Fractora Firm® is probably the most advanced and versatile technology available when it comes to whole-body skin tightening. Because of its safety measures, there is little chance of accidentally overheating the skin, causing electrical arcing. These safety features are truly important, as with greater powers there is the tremendous possibility of overheating. When optimal parameters are selected, Fractora Firm® can be used on almost all body surface areas from the face and neck to the arms and legs as well as the abdomen and back. The versatility of this technology is truly remarkable and with no consumable equipment, it makes sense to use this device to its fullest potential. WHAT IS FRACTORA FIRM®?
Fractora Firm® is a new device that works with the BodyTite® platform and combines precise dermal and sub-dermal tissue heating with the attainment of the optimal thermal zone and the ability to maintain the desired temperature for an extended period of time. Its unique safety features allow us to heat the skin and maintain its temperature without overheating it. Its built-in sensors automatically stop delivering energy when the therapeutic endpoint is reached. This is truly a unique safety feature that does not require an external device for concomitant thermal monitoring.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRADITIONAL WAYS TO REDUCE FAT?
Fat reduction is one of the last holy grails of cosmetic facial and body rejuvenation. We have surgical as well as non-surgical fat reduction modalities. Surgical fat reduction techniques include various forms of liposuction (tumescent liposuction, laser liposuction, BodyTite® liposuction as well as water-jet-based liposuction) as well as tummy tucks. Some of these techniques are better than others in fat reduction and skin tightening. For example, BodyTite® liposuction has the greatest ability for skin contraction when compared to other liposuction methods. With respect to non-surgical fat reduction technologies, there are UltraShape®, Liposonix®, Zeltiq®. These techniques rely on focused ultrasound (UltraShape® and Liposonix®) as well as cooling the fat and skin (Zeltiq®). These techniques can reduce 1-2 inches off the waist when the abdominal region is treated.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRADITIONAL WAYS TO TIGHTEN THE SKIN?
With respect to skin tightening, we need to understand that there are surgical as well as non-surgical modalities. Let’s focus on the facial skin. With respect to surgical modalities, we are talking about facelifts and neck lifts. These techniques are very successful and can result in long-term improvements. The downside of these modalities is that they also result in skin scarring that can at times be difficult to camouflage. With the explosion of the tremendous weight loss procedures, people are frequently left with great skin excess. It is for this reason that some of the skin-removing facial techniques are also being adapted for other body regions. With respect to non-surgical technologies, we need to realize that they encompass a multitude of technologies including laser rejuvenation and resurfacing, chemical peels (medium to deep kind), IPL therapies, as well as a variety of radiofrequency technologies. Within the radiofrequency group, there is Thermage®, Apollo Tripolar®, Venous Freeze® as well as the new addition – Fractora Firm®.
WHAT TREATMENTS CAN BE COMBINED WITH FRACTORA FIRM®?
Fractora Firm®, being non-ablative in nature, can be safely combined with many modalities that face and body rejuvenation clinics should have and offer. As such, it can be combined with chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Botox®, fillers, IPL, fractional technologies as well as surgical modalities. I am not suggesting that we all need these treatments to achieve our final objective or that these treatments must be done at the same time as Fractora Firm, but that Fractora Firm®’s high safety profile makes combination therapies with these treatments possible. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF FRACTORA FIRM®?
This is the good news! Although nothing in life is side effect-free, Fractora Firm® treatments, when optimal parameters and patients are selected, are very safe and reliable. Of course, in some instances, some side effects can occur but these are likely related to factors that are difficult to control or predict. For example, it is possible that the treatments can reactivate the “cold sore” virus when facial areas are treated. I believe that if a patient has frequent “cold sores” then appropriate prophylaxis or close observation and access to medical advice is warranted. In general, I would consider the Fractora Firm® treatments one of the safest procedures available today.
Facial and body treatment options continue to become more versatile and having Fractora Firm® as one of the options will definitely add to this growing list of safe and effective treatments. As always, proper patient assessment by a physician is a must to ensure that patients are good candidates and their expectations are appropriate.
